Our Church History
Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church was established in October 1897 by Rev. Braxton, along with a small group of devoted believers on North 9th Street. Rooted in faith and fellowship, the church has grown steadily over the years, becoming a vital spiritual and community hub in Griffin, Georgia.
In 1955, under the visionary leadership of our 12th Pastor, Rev. J.C. Smith, Rising Star began to expand its reach. Rev. Smith introduced Youth Sunday, a powerful initiative to engage the next generation in worship and service. His leadership also led to the acquisition of our current location at 132 West Cherry Street, purchased on July 26, 1975, with services beginning just weeks later on August 10, 1975. By 1995, the church underwent a full remodeling to better serve the growing congregation and the needs of the community.
Rising Star has a long-standing commitment to missions, education, and community service. In 1992, we awarded our first college scholarships to graduating high school seniors, a tradition that continues to this day. In 1995, Rising Star became the proud sponsor of Pack #107, the first African American Boy Scout Troop in Griffin.
Our commitment to outreach expanded with the launch of the Empowerment Community Day in 2004, offering food, resources, and entertainment to our neighbors. In 2005, we built the Community Resource Center, now home to the Abundant Life Soup Kitchen, serving countless individuals and families in need. Our mentorship programs for both young boys and girls continue to shape future leaders in faith and character.

Current Leadership
On December 31, 2003, Rev. Gerod Duff and First Lady Lawanda Duff were called to lead Rising Star into a new era. Pastor Duff’s first official service took place in March 2004, setting the tone for a ministry rooted in sound biblical teaching, dynamic worship, and active community engagement.
Under Pastor Duff’s leadership, Rising Star has continued to grow spiritually and numerically. In 2010, we hosted our first Youth Summer Camp, offering spiritual enrichment and fun-filled activities. In 2012, Pastor Duff was recognized as an Outstanding Minister in the State of Georgia, a testament to his commitment to excellence in ministry and leadership.
First Lady Lawanda Duff serves faithfully alongside her husband, offering spiritual support, leadership in women's and youth ministries, and a heart for service that inspires many. Together, they are a powerful team dedicated to building faith, empowering families, and transforming the community
